Central Texas volunteer fire chief remains missing after violent floods

A volunteer fire chief remains missing this week after devastating flash floods ripped through Central Texas and the Texas Hill Country over the weekend. With more than 100 confirmed dead and over 100 people still unaccounted for across the region, emergency response crews continue the grueling effort of digging through debris and dilapidated properties to locate those missing.

Michael Phillips, volunteer chief of the Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department, went missing during a rescue attempt over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas shared on Sunday, July 6. During a news conference on Monday, July 7, the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they’ve been searching in a “pretty remote area” for the missing chief, adding low-water crossings and bridges have been washed out and led to helicoptering personnel in to conduct the search.

“I think y’all know we found his vehicle. We’ve also found some personal items down there. We still have not found Chief Phillips yet,” Burnet County Sheriff Calvin Boyd said on Monday, adding it remains an active search…
