BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A new proposed agreement between the City of Bakersfield and a nonprofit organization could transform a vacant lot in southeast Bakersfield into a green space, providing local, organic food options to the food desert of the city, according to the Bakersfield City Council agenda.
If approved at the meeting on Wednesday, the agreement would award $728,904 to the nonprofit Circle of Life Development Foundation’s MLK CommUNITY Garden Initiative to transform a city-owned vacant lot in southeast Bakersfield into a green space.
“Using organic practices, the garden will provide access to locally grown, culturally relevant vegetables, fruits and herbs otherwise not easily affordable, available, or accessible to the underserved residents of Southeast Bakersfield,” the agenda said.
