Coroner rules on cause of death for Dauphin County judge who collapsed while riding bike

A Dauphin County magistrate of nearly 20 years died of cardiovascular disease while riding his bike on July 4, the county coroner’s office said.

Michael J. Smith, 72, collapsed while riding a bike in Lebanon County and was pronounced dead at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. His time of death was not specified.

The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office said Smith died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a condition caused by a buildup of fats and/or cholesterol on artery walls…
