The Rio finds new life as community hub
Nearly one year ago, we celebrated that the “for sale” sign had come down at the Monte Rio Theater and Extravaganza. Since then, the Rio (as locals call it) has come back to life as a hub for creativity and connection, screening classic and new blockbuster films, hosting community events and now housing the Music Library, where anyone can jam, borrow instruments or simply soak in the artistic spirit of the Russian River. With each passing month, the theater has grown into more than a venue. It’s a living, breathing part of Monte Rio’s evolving identity. And this July, it’s about to turn up the volume even more.
HighRio debuts July 12 with all-day music lineup
On Saturday, July 12, the brand-new HighRio music festival makes its debut. A collaboration between Monte Rio Theater and Extravaganza owner David Lockhart and musician/organizer Mike Rosenblum, HighRio is an all-day, all-ages celebration of local talent, summertime energy and the enduring spirit of Monte Rio.
Running from noon to 10 p.m., HighRio is more than just a concert — it’s a grassroots expression of love for music and our community by the river. Headlining the event is PrettyBoy Chance, Rosenblum’s own band, whose energy and momentum have been building in the Bay Area since their debut at the Monte Rio Theater last year. Also performing are local and regional favorites like Jim Ocean Band, Awake (a mesmerizing Doors tribute act fronted by Lockhart himself), the Steve Pile Band, Matt Jaffe, WD Saw, the Live Oaks and more. With an outdoor stage built specially for the occasion — donated and constructed by local contractor and Guerneville favorite Tommy Treehouse with Peabody Construction — and Precision Audio on sound, the quality will match the passion of the event.
A celebration for all ages
“It started as a way to support the Monte Rio Theater and bring people together through music,” says Rosenblum, who splits his time between San Francisco and Guerneville. “Then it grew into something more, something the whole community could enjoy, kids and adults alike.”
Family-friendly by design, the festival will include lawn games like cornhole and ladder ball, local food vendors and a community arts project with River Arts. “It’s going to be music, art, food and fun,” says Rosenblum. “And it’s meant for everyone.”…
