Upstate cities that use the gunshot detection technology called ShotSpotter sing its praises. However, some groups say it leads to increased policing in minority neighborhoods.
Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said the technology has improved officers’ ability to respond to gunshots.
“It pinpoints it down into, many cases, a location that’s within three meters. So it brings officers directly to the scene of a shots fired, which allows us to collect the [shell casings]. It allows us to render aid if someone’s been shot, and it gets us to the scene if no one has called,” Cecile said…
