Man sentenced to 14 years for shooting in front of off-duty cop, days after release in earlier gun case

A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for opening fire on a West Side street in front of an off-duty Chicago police officer—just 15 days after posting bail in a separate gun case.

Jawaun Stamps pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to Cook County court records. Judge Kenneth Wadas sentenced him to 13 years on the firearm discharge charge and a consecutive one-year term for illegal weapon possession.

The shooting occurred on the afternoon of June 4, 2022, in the 3600 block of West Douglas Boulevard. A Chicago police detective was driving to work when he came upon a silver Dodge Charger idling in a traffic lane, according to prosecutors. As the officer waited behind the car, Stamps allegedly stepped out of the front passenger seat holding a rifle, crouched behind a parked vehicle, and began firing at a nearby home…
