Vendors still showing up after Berkeley Flea Market’s official closure

The Berkeley Flea Market may be officially closed, with the nonprofit that ran it no longer holding an active lease to the parking lot of the Ashby BART station, but that hasn’t stopped longtime vendors from showing up and selling their wares.

On Saturday, a week after what was supposed to be the final day for the half-century-old market in South Berkeley, about 15 stalls were up and operating, similar to previous weeks.

For all appearances, not much had changed except for a small white table that stood in the southern tip of the market near the main gateway to the BART station with a paper sign stuck on it reading: “Keeping Market Open.” Standing behind the table was Christopher Smith, a drummer at the market who has spearheaded the movement to save it…
