Woolworth’s grand opening set for October, but soft open still likely later this summer

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A date has been set for the official grand opening of downtown’s renovated and modernized Woolworth’s building – Oct. 25.

If that seems like a long wait, take heart – the historic five and dime, at the center of Bakersfield’s post-war shopping district, is still on track to open later this summer, most likely in late August.

It will be a soft open, designed to get the Woolworth’s lunch counter and other food service offerings up to speed prior to the buzz of an official ribbon cutting.

The Woolworth’s building, under the ownership of Sherrod and Emily Waite and the architectural direction of Daniel Cater, is transitioning away from the five-and-dime era of its founding 75 years ago and into the modern era – except for the luncheonette, the last operating Woolworth’s lunch counter in existence…
