Myron Remembers: In this third in a summer series, Myron remembers restaurants of the past in Fayetteville and shares stories on the ever-evolving food scene in a town often defined by national and regional chains but with more mom-and-pop restaurants than you might think.

When you have lived in Fayetteville or any place for a minute, you see restaurants come and go — from chains to mom-and-pops. As a military town, we have plenty of the former. But we have our fair share of the latter, too, many of them powered by veterans turned entrepreneurs and an immigrant community that is bigger than people outside of Fayetteville think — as illustrated every year during the International Folk Festival Parade of Nations.

I remember when we used to have a Godfather’s Pizza around here, in Tallywood. A rumor persists that Fayetteville used to have a TGI Friday’s, but that is not the case. We did once have chains like Beef O’Brady’s and great local places like George’s, which served up top-notch subs on Yadkin Road for 30+ years. We had a restaurant called Sambo’s, part of a national chain, near Bragg  Boulevard and Sycamore Dairy Road, in the parking lot where the longtime flea market is located. (Used to be a Kmart there.)…
