Solomon Proposes Funds for Safer Streets, Activists Push for Speed Limits

Street safety is at the heart of a newly proposed budget amendment following the death of a six-year-old who was struck and killed last month while riding his bike downtown.

Councilman James Solomon plans to put to a vote a “transfer” of more than $1 million from the surplus to the Department of Infrastructure’s allocations. He expects that to allow the department to “move quickly across all neighborhoods of Jersey City to build safer intersections, study dangerous streets, and ensure every pedestrian can cross a street safely in our city.”

“This moment demands meaningful action,” Solomon announced this week. “Our Department of Infrastructure remains underfunded, which has seriously hampered their ability to advance Jersey City’s Vision Zero goals. For example, our Chief Engineer position has been open for nearly a full calendar year.”…
