Tennessee Valley Authority expanding power grid by 500 megawatts, more plans to expand in the future

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority is adding 500 megawatts of energy to the power grid. Officials said the extra energy can power almost 300,000 homes.

In a release sent out Thursday, the TVA stated that the additional energy comes from 10 new aeroderivative gas turbines that can generate 50 megawatts per unit. The turbines are housed at Johnsonville Combustion Turbine Plant, which is west of Nashville, and can be up and running at full power in around five minutes.

The new turbines boost the plant’s ability to provide power to TVA’s grid up to 1,200 megawatts. Officials said the grid is responsible for providing power to more than 10 million people across seven states…
