Lone measles case in South Carolina Upstate should be taken seriously, Grand Strand doctor says

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — It’s possible that the measles virus could spread to Horry County after the South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed a case in the Upstate on Wednesday, according to a Grand Strand Health infectious disease physician.

The measles case in the Upstate is the first confirmed case in the Palmetto State since September. It comes as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says reported cases in the country recently hit their highest level in 33 years.

“It is the most infectious virus, or any type of infectious agent, on the planet,” said Dr. Robert Sherertz of Grand Strand Health. “If you had a school room full of kids, and they were all susceptible, you put one kid in that classroom, and after an hour, 100% of the kids would be infected.”…
