How to stay safe in a mountain lion encounter

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With reports of a big cat roaming the streets of Rochester, it is important to be prepared just in case you cross paths with the mysterious cat.

According to the official U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the first step to staying safe in cougar country is just being aware of your surroundings — being observant may prevent danger more than anything.

If you do directly encounter a cougar, DO NOT RUN! Instead, be aggressive and make yourself appear larger. Try opening your jacket like wings, wave your arms around, throw sticks or stones, just don’t turn away or let your guard down.

The animal will be more afraid of you than you are of it if you keep your composure and assert yourself. Make eye contact, stand your ground…
