AKRON, Ohio — A staple of downtown Akron for decades will soon be full of residential space.

The City of Akron announced Thursday the CitiCenter was officially sold to Welty Development Group. The CitiCenter has a long history in Akron; it was first built in 1931 as a Young Women’s Christian Association. Then, it became a mixed-used office space. Since 1993, it’s been owned by the city.
Since 2017, the building has been mostly vacant after the Akron Public Utilities relocated. Once that happened, the city began renewed efforts toward development. Welty was selected for the project in July of 2023…
