‘Did the Thunderbirds ground my flight?’: Air Show raises eyebrows at FWA

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — As the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds roared through the skies over Fort Wayne Friday, but one viewer says the jet-fueled spectacle may have come at a cost…their flight.

In a Facebook message sent to a WANE 15 staff member, they said that their commercial trip from Fort Wayne to Chicago was canceled during Thunderbird practice hours, raising questions about how the military air show interacts with commercial flight schedules at Fort Wayne International Airport.

Airport leaders say the air show is a highly coordinated event, and cancellations are not their call.

“We’ve been talking to the airlines since November,” said Scott Hinderman, Executive Director of Airports for FWA. “We gave them arrival and departure windows, even if that meant shifting a flight 15 minutes either way.”…
