Perry County coroner confirms identity of ‘Jane Doe’

A decades-old mystery finally found closure during the June 30 meeting of the Perry County commissioners, when Coroner Robert Ressler announced the successful identification of a woman whose remains were discovered in 1979.

After more than four decades of uncertainty, Jane Doe was identified as Doris Girtz, a 24-year-old woman from Rodine, Ohio. Girtz’s remains were originally discovered along Route 22/322 in Watts Twp. Despite early investigative efforts by the Newport State Police, the case remained unsolved for years. In 2008, her remains were sent to Mercyhurst University for forensic analysis, but the DNA samples were too limited for identification.
