Despite heavy rains in Hill Country, Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus Christi levels continue to drop

Despite recent flooding rains in the Hill Country, water levels at Choke Canyon Reservoir and Lake Corpus Christi continue to decline.

As of July 10, Choke Canyon Reservoir had dropped to just 13.0% of its capacity, down from 13.2% on July 3. Lake Corpus Christi has also seen a decrease, falling from 21.6% to 21.2% over the same period.

While Central Texas received heavy rainfall that flooded the Guadalupe and Llano rivers, the Frio River, which feeds into Choke Canyon, is located farther west, where rain was far less abundant. Additionally, ongoing drought conditions in the region meant that much of the rainfall was absorbed by dry ground, with ponds and tanks capturing runoff before it could reach the reservoir…
