Bexar County judge: Change in Presiding Court system will be ‘catastrophic’

Dismantling Bexar County’s Presiding Court system would be “catastrophic” to the way the civil district courts operate, requiring millions of dollars to pay for more courts and personnel, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai said.

“If the Presiding system is to be dismantled, we’re talking a cost minimum $4 million to $9 million immediately,” he said in an interview.

Judge Christine Hortick, elected to the 225th Civil District Court in 2022 to replace Sakai, who stepped down to successfully run for Bexar County judge, has challenged the Presiding system that assigns pretrial hearings to different judges.
