TABOR CITY, N.C. (WECT) – The Tabor City Police Department confirmed a 62-year-old drowned at Lake Tabor Saturday afternoon.
Tabor City PD was called to the scene on Lynwood Norris Road around 3:45 p.m. The man, identified as Ernest Lee Chavis, was recovered from the water around 6:30 p.m.
Witnesses told officers Chavis had been trying to recover an inflatable beach ball that had gone into the water. According to them, he jumped off the pier, swam 100 feet out to retrieve the ball, and then disappeared under the water on his way back…
