One woman’s mission to save a piece of family history from the ruins of Maria Regina

Devestated by a fire, a Syracuse city landmark is slated for demolition. But one woman is hoping she can save a piece of her family’s history.

In 1982, Sister Francis Agnes Ryan created “The Grateful Leper,” a 12′ by 7′ triptych mosaic depicting Mother Marianne Cope washing the feet of someone suffering from the disease. It’s a celebration of faith with a uniquely Syracuse twist. Part of the mosaic is made using crushed Syracuse China, which the Sister’s niece – Anne Anthony – helped break up herself as a young girl.

Now, Anthony is working to try to recover the mosaic. She’s worried about it’s future after flames erupted at the Maria Regina Campus in March. City firefighters fought the fire for more than 26 hours, and while the fire was put out, the damage was done. City crews condemned the building as being too dangerous to enter, and the old Motherhouse is now slated for demolition…
