NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Downtown New Orleans streets were awash in a sea of white and red early Saturday (July 12), for the 19th San Fermin in Nueva Orleans fundraising event.
Dozens of roller derby “bulls,” adorned with decorative horns and wielding plastic bats, skated through the streets looking to strike slow-moving or inattentive participants. It is the annual uniquely New Orleans take on the famous Festival of San Fermin, where participants run from real bulls unleashed on the streets of Pamplona, Spain.
“The atmosphere, the people, the butts!” said one “bull” celebrating her 10th run in New Orleans. “Roller derby, in and of itself, is a contact sport. So, any time we can get the community and the public involved with a little contact, I’m a good sport.”…
