St. Pete Beach officials say elevated, but not dangerous arsenic levels found at previous FEMA debris site

ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — City officials say soil samples show elevated levels of arsenic and benzopyrene at Egan Park in St. Pete Beach, which was used as a FEMA disaster debris site after last year’s hurricanes hit the area.

While elevated, state officials told the city that the levels of chemicals in the soil were not high enough to warrant mitigation or remediation of the area.

“We had about 225,000 cubic yards of debris come through this site in response to those storms,” said city Public Services Director Camden Mills. “We requested closure of that debris management site permit.”…
