Seven Year Prison Term For Walnut Creek Farmers Market Hit-And-Run Driver

The Vallejo man charged with a devastating DUI crash through the Walnut Creek Farmers Market in June of last year has apparently accepted a 7 year prison sentence in a plea arrangement agreed to by prosecutors.

Jose Manuel Chavez, 35, was facing 9 to 17 years in state prison if convicted of multiple charges stemming from the June 2 crash that left a market vendor gravely disabled and her daughter seriously injured. Chavez has been in custody since the day of the crash, entering a guilty plea to the charges against him earlier this month.

The hit and run crash with which he was charged occurred during market setup, around 5:17 am, on Locust Street in Walnut Creek, between Cole and Lacassie Avenues, Chavez’s black Ford Explorer striking two female victims – leaving them both down with serious injuries – and driving away until he was stopped by a WCPD officer a short distance away.

On June 5th, the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office filed initial charges against Chavez in Superior Court…
