Knoxville neighbors say they are navigating the closure of I-275 well as crews work on bridge replacement project

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — I-275 is scheduled to reopen on Monday morning, according to TDOT. With the first of three planned closures to complete an accelerated bridge replacement concluded, neighbors said that any increase in traffic along I-640 and I-40 or rerouting of trips they’ve had to do has been a tolerable inconvenience.

“I had no idea what was going on,” said Joni Walker, who drove I-40 between Turkey Creek and East Knoxville multiple times this weekend. “If I had no idea what was going on, I’m sure a lot of people were like, ‘How do I get to where I’m going now?’”

Walker, who lives in South Knoxville, said she overcame her initial confusion on Saturday and hasn’t had a problem navigating across town and the downtown area since. She has lived in Knoxville for four years and must think through alternative routes when road construction occurs, but she’d rather see the I-275 project finished quickly than adapt to long-term work…
