Off-duty cops saw man open fire during expressway confrontation: prosecutors

A 23-year-old man has been detained for allegedly firing seven shots into another car during a daytime road rage incident on the Stevenson Expressway—an act that was witnessed by an off-duty police detective.

Giovanni Ramirez was a backseat passenger in a vehicle traveling inbound on the Stevenson near Ashland Avenue on July 2 when an altercation broke out with another driver, prosecutors said in a detention petition. Ramirez allegedly pulled out a gun and fired about seven rounds into the other car, striking it four times. Two people were inside the targeted vehicle, but no injuries were reported.

An off-duty police detective witnessed the shooting and provided a license plate number to authorities, according to the petition. Police later interviewed other occupants of Ramirez’s vehicle, who identified him as the shooter, prosecutors said. Ramirez subsequently admitted to firing the gun and surrendered the weapon to police, prosecutors said.

Judge James Murphy III ordered Ramirez held, noting that he “made a full confession.”…
