Readers respond: New parking meter hours hurt city nightlife

I’m really disappointed in the mayor and the Portland City Council for requiring drivers to pay for parking at meters until 10 p.m., (“Largest parking meter hike in Portland history goes into effect,” July 3).

For me, as someone with a modest income, the extra cost will mean fewer trips to restaurants, movie theaters and shops on the west side of town. Indeed, because most parking spots in the metered areas have a two-hour limit, it will be close to impossible to arrange an occasional night out that includes dining and entertainment.

Finally, as a musician who is already challenged to find parking for gigs in metered areas, having to pay for parking after 7 p.m. will be an added burden. I can’t help but wonder whether these and other consequences have been thought through…
