Exploding Water Bottle Lids Prompt Recall at Walmart

A popular Walmart water bottle has been recalled due to a dangerous lid defect that can cause serious eye injuries, including vision loss. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) issued the recall after receiving reports of the lids forcefully ejecting from the bottles, striking consumers in the face.

The defect appears to occur when the bottles are used to store carbonated or perishable beverages like juice or milk, or after storing food in them. Pressure buildup inside the bottle can cause the lid to explode off when opened. Two people have reported permanent vision loss as a result of being struck in the eye by the exploding lids.

The recalled product is the Ozark Trail 64-ounce insulated stainless steel water bottle. It’s silver with a black, one-piece screw-on lid.

While the bottle itself doesn’t have a model number printed on it, the packaging displays model number 83-662. The 11.5-inch tall bottle features the Ozark Trail logo on the side.

The affected water bottles were sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide and on Walmart’s website since 2017 for approximately $15.

The USCPSC urges anyone who owns this water bottle to stop using it immediately and return it to their nearest Walmart for a full refund. Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Walmart at 800-925-6278 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
