Unseen Bodycam: Dallas Officer’s Split-Second Decision in Fatal Knife Standoff

Video footage and 911 call recordings released Monday by the Dallas Police Department grant a rare glimpse into the tense moments preceding the fatal officer-involved shooting of a knife-wielding man on Fairview Avenue. Chief Daniel Comeaux unveiled the audio and multiple angles of body-worn camera footage from July 9 at a press briefing inside Jack Evans Police Headquarters, seeking to provide transparency after growing scrutiny of use-of-force incidents by the department.

The 911 call, recorded at 9:55 a.m., captures frantic descriptions of a man armed with two knives walking erratically in the 3000 block of Fairview Avenue. “There is a man … with a knife in his hand … it looks like he’s cutting himself on his arm,” an alarmed neighbor said, illustrating the suspect’s volatile state of mind moments before officers arrived.
