Crime increase may correlate with warmer weather, according to local police

Warm weather is being linked to an increase in crime rates in Erie, with police calls rising significantly during the summer months.

The Erie Police Department has reported a rise in call volumes from about 900 to 1,000 calls per week in January to approximately 1,500 in July. This increase is attributed to more people being outside and interacting during the warmer months.

“Violent crime does tend to increase as it warms up,” said Rick Lorah, Deputy Chief of Police in Erie. “I just think that attributes to more people being outside and more people interacting with each other.”
