‘Quality of life’: North Myrtle Beach chamber recycles oyster shells to filter ocean water

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — North Myrtle Beach’s Chamber of Commerce recently took a boat ride with bags full of oyster shells to clean our waters, prevent erosion, and help other sea creatures.

The chamber went through 30,000 oysters at its March 1 fundraiser, according to Cheryl Kilday of Destination North Myrtle Beach. After the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources cleaned and bagged the shells, with about half a bushel in each bag, members of the chamber and the DNR planted 300 bags of shells in the salt marsh at Waties Island.

“If we can get all these restaurants and the community thinking more about recycling these oyster shells, imagine our waters in five and 10 years,” Kilday said. “In just one year, we’re going to be filtering one million gallons of water a day. That’s a lot.”…
