MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dozens of environmental activists rallied outside the Shelby County Health Department’s headquarters Monday, July 15, to protest the department’s recent decision to approve air permits for 15 gas turbines at the xAI supercomputer facility in Southwest Memphis.
The march was led by Tigers Against Pollution. The group held signs and demanded stronger protections for local air quality. One of the organization’s leaders, Orion Overstreet, told ABC24 how disappointed they were with the health department’s decision.
“For them to issue that permit on the same day that they issued a code orange in ground-level ozone…it’s a vivid and unbelievable demonstration of how little they actually care about the bodies and lives of residents in Shelby County,” Overstreet said…
