Trains last ran across an abandoned stretch of Queens tracks in 1962, but a distant dream to have them reactivated as more railway than greenway is still chugging.
The New York Public Interest Research Group’s Straphangers Campaign on Wednesday released a new report calling on the city to prioritize the long-hoped-for transit revival of what once was the Long Island Rail Road’s Rockaway Beach Branch.
“It is in need of not just a park, it is in need of a park and a subway,” said Matthew Paolucci, a campaign coordinator for the Straphangers Campaign. “It is in need of better connections for the people of Queens to get to where they need to go.”…
