I-TEAM: U-Visa program came under scrutiny years before alleged fraud allegations in LA

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Baton Rouge’s leading immigration attorney said it is mind-blowing that a number of small-town law enforcement officers in Louisiana are accused in a sophisticated scheme to apply for immigration visas intended for victims of crime.

Most people probably have never heard of a U-Visa. It’s a special non-immigrant visa reserved for victims or witnesses of serious crimes who assist law enforcement.

The WAFB I-TEAM found that since 2009, federal immigration data shows 156,346 U-Visas were issued to non-citizens in America. Another 119,101 were issued to family members of those victims, the I-TEAM uncovered. The data does not specify which states or cities the visas were issued…
