JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston City leaders discussed Tuesday options to make the Maybank Highway and Riverland Drive intersection safer.
The main roadway has been an issue for nearly 15 years, with its dangers increasing every year. According to Councilmember Jim McBride, who represents District 3, there have been 19 collisions in 2025 and it’s on track to break the highest rate already.
“It gets a little bit worse every year. It kind of goes up and down the statistics with the population steadily increasing about 600 people on average every year on Johns Island, which contributes to that intersection on James Island. It’s increasing to be more and more of a dangerous intersection,” McBride said…
