SCAM ALERT: Madison County Sheriff’s Office warns about scam callers pretending to be deputies

MADISON COUNTY, ALABAMA, Ala. — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam where callers pretend to be deputies and try to trick people into sending them money.

Scammers are calling people and claiming they have a warrant or have committed a crime. Then they pressure the person to pay up in order to avoid being arrested. The scammers may ask for payment through gift cards, Cash App, Venmo or wire transfers.

To make the scam seem real, the callers may even use technology to make the phone number look like it’s coming from the Sheriff’s Office…
