AG’s Violent Crime Reduction Team leading to felony indictments

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – Attorney General Russell Coleman has announced that action by his Louisville-based Violent Crime Reduction Team (VRT), which is part of his Special Prosecutions Unit, resulted in a felony indictment which could put a convicted felon back behind bars.

Chucobyion Javell McAtee, 21, was indicted by a Jefferson County Grand Jury on a charge of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon (a Class C Felony punishable by five to ten years in prison, if convicted). McAtee entered a not guilty plea when he was arraigned at Jefferson Circuit Court and is scheduled to go back before a judge on Aug. 29 for a pre-trial conference.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) investigated the case. Assistant Attorney General Hammad Khan will prosecute the case on behalf of the commonwealth.

In October 2024, Attorney General Coleman joined Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell, LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey and Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk David L.
