The $9M Patriot Gap: El Paso covers state’s promise to disabled veterans

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso offers more than gratitude to its disabled veterans—it offers property tax relief. But a state program meant to reimburse cities for that benefit is falling far short, leaving local taxpayers to pick up the tab.

According to City officials, El Paso will forgo nearly $9 million in property tax revenue in 2025 due to exemptions for 100% disabled veterans. The state’s reimbursement? Just $1.6 million.

“We submit our application for that $9 million,” said City of El Paso’s Chief Financial Officer Robert Cortinas. “We got back $1.6 million.”…
