Man convicted of murder in cellmate’s death at North Kern State Prison

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — An inmate at North Kern State Prison has been found guilty of murder in the death of his cellmate five years ago.

A jury on Wednesday convicted Willie Clay III, 35, of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, according to court records. Sentencing is set for next month.

On the night of Jan. 1, 2020, prison officers found 63-year-old Lawrence Tate bloody and unresponsive in the cell he shared with Clay. He received life-saving efforts and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day…
