Tennessee considers dropping foreign language requirement for high school graduation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A proposal to eliminate the requirement for Tennessee high school students to complete two years of foreign language study is under consideration by the Tennessee Board of Education.

The initiative, introduced by Board Chairman Bob Eby, suggests that students might benefit more from additional courses in math, science, or computer studies.

“There are certainly benefits to those courses,” said Eby. “And it is recognized state board rules provide for students to request a waiver of the world language requirement. But why should students have to request a waiver of this requirement if their ultimate path for their post-secondary success does not include utilization of a foreign language?”…
