Pedestrian struck, killed by car crossed at ‘don’t walk’ signal, police say

A woman who tried to cross against a “don’t walk” signal was fatally struck by a car on the city’s North Side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Around 9 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the 900 block of Hildebrand Ave. for a major accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, according to a preliminary police report.

A 59-year-old man, driving a gray Nissan Sentra, was headed west through the intersection of West Hildebrand Avenue and Blanco Road when 68-year-old Deborah Ann Melendez attempted to cross the street. She failed to yield to traffic and crossed against a “don’t walk” signal, according to police…
