Adirondack Hiking Trail Closed Due to Unusually Behaving Moose

A popular Adirondack hiking trail on Goodman Mountain in Tupper Lake has been temporarily closed due to a moose exhibiting peculiar behavior. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), along with the state wildlife veterinarian, investigated the situation on July 10th following reports of the moose’s prolonged presence near the trail.

Officials suspect the moose may be ill, explaining its unusual behavior and unresponsiveness to attempts to move it. While the DEC hasn’t detailed the specific behaviors prompting the closure, they stressed the importance of public safety.

“Moose are large animals, and while this one hasn’t shown aggression, they can be dangerous if approached too closely,” a DEC official stated. The closure aims to protect both the moose and hikers from a potential negative encounter.

Forest Rangers are actively enforcing the closure, and the trail will remain closed until the DEC deems it safe to reopen. The DEC continues to monitor the moose and will provide updates as the situation evolves.

Hikers are encouraged to explore other trails in the region.
