Sullivan’s Island future welcome sign sparks controversy over historical message

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD)–A new sign meant to celebrate Sullivan’s Island’s role in American history is stirring debate. The sign, reading “The Gateway to Liberty Since 1776,” is set to welcome visitors, honoring the Battle of Sullivan’s Island during the Revolutionary War. However, many residents say the phrase overlooks a painful part of the island’s past.

Disappointment and concern have been voiced over the tagline, which some say erases the island’s connection to the slave trade. According to the National Park Service, more than 400,000 enslaved Africans arrived in America through Sullivan’s Island.
