Proposed development would add more than 200 homes near North Main in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia leaders are considering a major new housing development that could bring hundreds of new homes to a growing area near the Broad River.

A developer is proposing to build 208 homes on over 100 acres of undeveloped land off Mountain Drive, near downtown Columbia. The subdivision, called Riverbend at Broad, would sit between I-20, the Broad River, and the Hyatt Park-Keenan Terrace neighborhood.

The area is currently a food desert, according to neighborhood president Bob Petrulis, who lives nearby. He said he hopes the new homes will attract essential services…
