LUBBOCK, Texas— According to TxDot, speeding is still a top cause of crashes here in Texas, claiming nearly 1,500 lives just last year, that is why TxDot is ramping efforts to save lives with its “Be Safe. Drive Smart” campaign.

Lanisa Dehn is a Lubbock woman who lost her 84-year-old mother, June Linker, back in 2020. Dehn said her mother was returning home from lunch and the unthinkable happened. “She was attempting to turn, and another car was going an excessive speed and crashed into her. The other driver was driving almost 90 miles an hour, which was twice the speed limit that it’s in that residential area.”
Even if you are running late, Michael Teran who is the traffic safety program manager for TxDot said it will not save you any time. “Speeding doesn’t save time. It costs lives.”
That is why Lanisa partnered with TxDot to push out ‘operation slowdown’ and Teran said it is not just one single person when driving on the road, “You risk the lives of every other person on the road with you. Speeding is not an accident. It’s a choice. And it can be a deadly one. This message isn’t just for the reckless speeders with a left foot driving even a little over the speed limit can make a crash both more likely and more dangerous.”

Lanisa said she misses her mother dearly and just wants drivers to think twice before stepping a bit harder on the pedal, “If there’s one message that I could get across to someone that is considering speeding would be take a moment and think about the heartache and suffering that my family has experienced with the loss of my mother. Please don’t make that choice. Slow down and drive the speed limit. Always slow down and drive the speed limit. It’s not that difficult to do.”…
