Woman dies after chase, shootout with Pinal County deputy

A woman died and a Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy was injured during an exchange of gunfire near a Fry’s grocery store following a chase on July 17 in San Tan Valley.

A sheriff’s sergeant tried to do a traffic stop on the car shortly before 8 p.m. in the area of Gantzel Road and Pecan Creek Drive, according to an email from Pinal County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson JD Fitzgerald. But the car didn’t stop, and deputies followed it.

The car crashed near North Gantzel and East Combs roads where the woman and deputies exchanged gunfire and she was shot. The driver, a 46-year-old woman, died at the location…
