Belleair, Florida – A Gilded Age Gem Reimagined

The Belleview Hotel, a grand dame of Florida’s Gulf Coast, once hosted the likes of the Vanderbilts, DuPonts, and Fords. Built in 1897 by railroad magnate Henry B.

Plant, the “White Queen of the Gulf” offered a luxurious escape for America’s elite. This opulent resort, designed to attract visitors to the burgeoning Tampa Bay area, boasted over 400 rooms and was, at one time, considered the world’s largest wooden structure.

Today, a mere fraction of the original hotel remains, transformed into a 35-room boutique inn. While much of the original structure was demolished in 2015 due to escalating renovation costs and storm damage, the preserved portion offers a glimpse into the hotel’s storied past. I recently had the opportunity to experience this unique piece of history.

Stepping into the inn’s lobby is like stepping back in time. The original grand staircase, gleaming chandeliers, and white paneled ceilings evoke the hotel’s Gilded Age splendor. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a glass of champagne, a touch of old-fashioned hospitality that set the tone for my stay.

My upgraded junior suite, overlooking the pool, featured modern amenities while retaining historical details like the original window sashes. Though renovated, the room’s decor paid homage to the hotel’s elegant past with dark leather furnishings and metallic accents.

While the inn lacks an on-site restaurant, a complimentary breakfast basket is delivered to each guest’s door every morning. A small cafĂ© offers snacks and drinks throughout the day. Guests also have access to a fitness center, a history room filled with artifacts, and the amenities of a sister hotel in Clearwater, including a private beach.

Although my weeknight stay was quiet, the inn’s tranquil atmosphere provided a welcome respite. The wrap-around porch offered a peaceful spot to relax and reflect on the hotel’s rich history. Across the street, the Belleair Country Club, Florida’s oldest golf club, welcomes inn guests.

The Belleview Inn offers a unique blend of history and modern comfort. It’s a place where the echoes of the Gilded Age still resonate, providing a truly memorable experience.
