Flood Mitigation in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Monte Sano, while beautiful, can pose a threat of flooding to the city of Huntsville. City engineers constantly conduct flood studies to determine areas in the city that are prone to flooding.

Kathy Martin, an engineer for the city of Huntsville, says two types of flooding can occur during a heavy rain event: localized and regional.

No two flood events are the same

“Localized drainage is more so flooding associated with backyards or sidewalk lines or roadway flooding,” Martin said. “Regional flooding things that are adjacent to streams in creeks or at the base of mountains that are regulated by FEMA and our national flood maps.”
