West Oakland metal company sued for raging ’23 fire

(KRON) — The Bay Area Air District and Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson filed a joint civil lawsuit against Radius Recycling for air quality violations related to a raging fire that burned at the metal company’s facility in West Oakland in August 2023.

“Radius Recycling’s actions endangered the health and well-being of the West Oakland community, an area already burdened by decades of air pollution,” said Dr. Philip Fine, executive officer of the air district.

The big blaze sent aluminum, tin, steel and iron particles into the air. The particles were carried as far south as Milpitas and as far north as Martinez.

“This lawsuit and permit action reflect the Air District’s unwavering commitment to protecting communities, holding polluters accountable and ensuring that facilities like Radius operate in full compliance with air quality regulations and their permit requirements,” Fine said…
