As National Ice Cream Day arrives this Sunday, Sacramento’s oldest ice cream establishment offers the perfect destination to celebrate America’s favorite frozen treat.

Gunther’s Ice Cream, founded in 1940 by Herman “Pop” Gunther and his wife, Iva, has served the Curtis Park neighborhood for 85 years. The parlor continues using its original 1940s recipe with higher butterfat content than commercial brands. Their signature “50/50” combines two sherbet flavors with vanilla ice cream, alongside more than 40 other flavors and hand-made specialties.
