Business owners in far East El Paso say Montana construction hurts them

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Business owners along Montana Avenue and near Loop 375 said they are losing customers and sales due to ongoing major road work that is part of the Montana expansion project.

“The project is scheduled to take about two more years, which is a little concerning. We’re trying to do everything we can just to stay afloat. We’re trying to do events, to promote the business, get more people here, even just giving away some free stuff,” said Elian Estrada, the chief financial officer for La Wheela, a bicycle shop.

Estrada’s family owns the shop, a restaurant, and the entire shopping center, which is located between Joe Battle Boulevard and Saul Kleinfeld Drive.

The construction project will transform part of Montana Avenue into an expressway with frontage roads and pedestrian improvements that include sidewalks and a shared use path, according to officials from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)…
